My Primary Function

Gee, it’s swell,
Just knowing that you are alive and well,
Enjoying a time when the
Dead outflank the living
A hundred billion to one.
Ain’t it keen
To know you are fuel for a great machine
For which self-renewal was
A primary function
Since the day the switch was thrown?
Each of us seeds sown to gardens,
Time will come to reap the harvest:
Some to market, some the compost pile.
Ain’t it grand
To know that you tread upon sacred land,
The compacted sediment
Of each earthly vessel
Of ev’rything that’s ever lived?
I can’t wait
Until such a time to fulfill my fate,
To pass from this life and serve
My primary function,
The greatest gift that I could give.
Each of us seeds sown to gardens,
Time will come to reap the harvest:
Some to market, some the compost pile.
I can’t wait
Until such a time to fulfill my fate,
To pass from this life and serve
My primary function,
The greatest gift that I could give.
